Michigan's freshmen led the way as Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario), Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) and J.J. Swistak (West Bloomfield, Mich.) all tallied goals for the Wolverines, and newcomer Mike Roemensky (White Lake, Mich.) earned his first collegiate point with an assist.
Cammalleri extended the U-M lead to 3-1 just 30 seconds into the final period. However, Michigan State's John-Michael Liles cut into the Wolverine lead with a power-play goal four minutes later. With just under five minutes left in the game, Michigan State's John Nail was able to slap a loose puck past Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) to even the score and send the game into overtime, where neither team could find the back of the net.
Michigan (23-7-4 18-5-3 CCHA) opened the scoring early in the first period on Swistak's second goal of the season. After John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) won the faceoff, Roemensky fired a shot on net that Swistak deflected past Spartan goaltender Ryan Miller. Michigan took the 1-0 lead into the first intermission.
Hilbert put the Wolverines ahead 2-0 just over two minutes into the second period. Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) carried the puck behind the Spartan net and fed Hilbert a pass in the slot. Hilbert launched the puck over Miller's shoulder for the goal. The Spartans (22-10-3, 17-8-1 CCHA) cut into the Wolverine lead just 40 seconds later when Brian Maloney beat Blackburn from inside the left circle to make it a 2-1 game.
Cammalleri's power-play goal 30 seconds into the third period gave the Wolverines their second two-goal lead of the night. The goal was the first power-play tally against the Spartans in the last 15 opportunities, dating back to Cammalleri's goal in the second period of the Great Lakes Invitational championship game on Dec. 30. Cammalleri now has three career goals against the Spartans in just four games.
Blackburn made 26 saves for the Wolverines and improved his record to 10-1-4 on the season. Michigan State's Miller made 24 stops.
Next weekend the Wolverines close out the regular-season schedule with a home-and-home series with Bowling Green State University. Friday night (March 3) the Wolverines travel to Bowling Green, Ohio, to take on the Falcons at 7:35 p.m. Saturday night (March 4) Michigan will host BGSU in the regular-season finale at 7:05 p.m. in Yost Ice Arena. Saturday's game will be the annual Senior Night, presented by the Dekers booster club.
