Michigan Escapes Ferris State with 4-2 Victory
2/4/2000 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
With the fifth-ranked Wolverines trailing 2-1 late in the third period, Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) scored with 3:45 remaining to tie the game, and Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) netted the game-winner on a power play with 54 seconds to go. Hilbert added an empty-net goal to produce the final score.
Michigan (20-6-1, 15-4-1 CCHA) opened the scoring in the first as Bill Trainor (Canton, Mich.) tallied his first goal of the season and second of his career, after sitting the last six games. Trainor found the net just over two minutes into the game on a fluke shot from the high slot to give Michigan the early lead. After goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) and Andrew Merrick (Syosset, N.Y.) advanced the puck up the ice, Trainor took a shot from just past the blue line and the puck hit the top edge of Phil Osaer's glove and flipped up and behind Osaer into the net.
Ferris State (15-12-2, 8-11-2 CCHA) tied the game at 1-1 with a short-handed goal at the 13:40 mark of the second period. With the Bulldog's Kevin Swider in the penalty box, Brent Wishart carried the puck up the left side of the ice and passed to Jason Basile. Basile fired a shot and Blackburn made the initial save, but Basile was able to collect the rebound and stuff it past a stretched-out Blackburn.
The Wolverines fell behind 2-1 just 49 seconds into the final period when Swider scored a power-play goal. On the play, Brent Wishart fired a shot on net that tied up Blackburn on the right side. The puck slipped loose and Swider shot it into Swistak. The puck stopped under J.J. Swistak's (West Bloomfield, Mich.) leg, but Swider was able to poke it under for the goal.
Blackburn stayed unbeaten (7-0-1) this season as he made 25 saves. Osaer had just 14 saves as the Wolverines tied a season low with 18 shots on goal, including a mere two in the first period.
A rematch between the Wolverines and Bulldogs is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. on Saturday (Feb. 5) at Yost Ice Arena.
