Senior Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ontario/East Northumberland HS) became the fourth Wolverine distance runner to earn indoor All-America honors in the 5,000-meter run as he finished fifth with a season- and career-best time of 14:05.21. His prior best was 14:05.40, which he ran at the Silverston Invitational (Feb. 19).
Senior Jay Cantin (Camlachie, Ontario/St. Claire SS) missed the cut for the final of the mile and his chance to repeat as an All-American after finishing his preliminary heat in a time of 4:14.44. The time put him 15th out of the 16 competitors.
Lawrence's fifth-place finish earned the Wolverines four team points, placing Michigan in a tie for 22nd place after Friday's seven event finals. The Wolverines' final team finish will be determined when the NCAA meet wraps up Saturday (March 11).
Lawrence is Michigan's first indoor All-American in the 5,000 meters since current Wolverine John Mortimer (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry HS) in 1998. In addition, the Wolverines have one NCAA national champion in the indoor 5,000-meter run, with John Scherer winning the title in 1989. Michigan's other All-American in the 5,000 was Brad Barquest in 1991.
The Wolverines open the outdoor season with a trip to Tallahassee, Fla., March 17-19 to participate in the Florida State Invitational.
