"The new ticket policy has been developed in response to growth in demand for football tickets among students, faculty and staff, and alumni since the national championship season in 1997," said Marty Bodnar, U-M Director of Tickets Operations. In 1997, 14,500 seats were allotted to students. In 1998, 5,000 seats were added to Michigan Stadium and all of the new seats went to students. Bodnar noted that at 22,000 student tickets, "We are providing 2,500 more seats for students beyond the 5,000 seats added during the expansion.
"This ticket policy will help us to fairly accommodate the needs of all members of the campus community who would like to attend our football games," Bodnar said. About 500 faculty and staff members have been on the waiting list for the past two years. The new policy, he noted, also will help stabilize the student ticket allotment, which fluctuates from year to year.
"We expect this ticket allocation will accommodate most, if not all, of the student applications," Bodnar said. Refunds will be issued by random selection among first-year Ann Arbor graduate students and all Flint and Dearborn campus students only if student ticket applications exceed 22,000. Priority has been given to undergraduate and returning graduate students on the Ann Arbor campus.
The Athletic Department has set aside plans to implement a proposed student ID policy, under which student ticket holders would have been required to show their ID at the gate when attending games. The Department decided not to require IDs this fall in response to concerns voiced by students, Bodnar said. However, the idea of a student ID policy will continue to be studied.
