Wolverines Keep Penn State Winless in Big Ten

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team dominated Penn State by a 6-1 score Saturday afternoon (April 22) at the Varsity Tennis Center outdoor courts despite cool and windy conditions. The Wolverines (9-10) improved to 3-6 in Big Ten Conference dual match competition, while Penn State (7-9) remains winless in conference action.

Michigan swept the doubles matches to claim a 1-0 lead in the match. Senior Erryn Weggenman (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) and freshman Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) started off by winning an 8-4 match at No. 3, beating Penn State's Judy Wang and Teresa Whiteside. Senior co-captain Brooke Hart (Cincinnati, Ohio/Anderson HS) and freshman Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) secured the team point with an 8-5 victory over Pilar Montgomery and Alison Barnett at No. 1. Michigan's doubles sweep was completed as senior co-captain Danielle Lund (Leominster, Mass./Leominster HS) and junior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) posted an 8-5 win over Rebecca Ho and Martina Kopacova at No. 2.

In singles action, the Wolverines won at No. 1 through No. 5 spots to claim a 6-1 victory. Hart, Lund and Duprez won matches in straight sets, while Fuzesi and Musgrove held on for three-set wins. Penn State gained its only point as Janelle Perez defeated junior Marya Farah (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) by a 6-3, 6-4 score at No. 6.

Michigan completes the regular season against Ohio State tomorrow (Sunday, April 23, 11 a.m.) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The match will be the final regular-season home contest for seniors Brooke Hart, Danielle Lund and Erryn Weggenman.
