ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Minnesota freshman Michaela Havelkova rebounded from a first-set loss to post a three-set win and propel the Golden Gophers to a 4-2 victory over No. 1 seed Ohio State in the Big Ten Conference Women's Tennis Championship semifinals on Saturday afternoon (April 29). With the win, the Golden Gophers advance to the championship match against the defending champion Northwestern Wildcats tomorrow (Sunday, April 30) at noon at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Ohio State opened play by taking the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. OSU's Kristy Dascoli and Monica Rincon posted an 8-2 victory over Sandra Olsen and Michaela Havelkova at No. 1 doubles, while Sadhaf Pervez and Laura Maloney won 8-4 over Kim Simonsen and Tammy Wang at the No. 2 spot. Minnesota's Nora Sauska and Jenny Howard recorded an 8-4 win over Michelle Matko and Claudia Castro at the No. 3 spot.
However, Minnesota came roaring back, capturing four of the five singles matches in recording the win. Minnesota's Olsen posted a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Rincon at No. 2 singles, while senior Simonsen took a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Matko at the No. 3 slot. Also picking up victories for the Golden Gophers were Havelkova (1-6, 6-3, 6-4) at No. 5 singles and junior Wang, who posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Taryn Bowen at No. 6 singles.
Ohio State freshman Pervez took a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Minnesota's Amy Thomas for the Buckeyes' lone win in singles action. The No. 1 match between Minnesota's Sauska and Ohio State's Dascoli was abandoned.
Minnesota (18-5) advances to the championship match, while Ohio State ends the Big Ten Championship with a 17-7 record.
