EAST LANSING, Mich. -- It was the final regular-season tournament. It was the third straight important District IV positioning battle. It was the final tuneup for conference championships and the University of Michigan men's golf team used solid and consistent play to finish tied for seventh in the 18-team battle at the Bruce Fossum Invitational (April 29-30) at Michigan State University's Forest Akers West Course. The Wolverines finished with rounds of 303-293-303 for a tournament total of 899 and a tie for the seventh position with Louisville.
Kent took home the tournament title by seven strokes over Northwestern. The Golden Flashes finished with an 870 total after rounds of 288-285-297, bettering the Buckeyes' rounds of 299-289-289 for an 877 finish. Northwestern's Jess Daley won the individual medalist honors after shooting rounds of 72-69-70/211 for a two-stroke victory. Rhode Island's Jim Salinetti finished as the runner-up with a 213 after carding rounds of 68-73-72.
Senior Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) closed out his regular-season career at Michigan, leading the Wolverines for the seventh time this season. He finished tied for ninth after firing rounds of 74-72-74 for a 220 tournament total. Sophomore Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central HS) fired back-to-back-to-back rounds of 75 to finish tied for 26th, carding a 225 total.
Senior Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS) finished tied for 38th (77-73-77/227). Senior/junior Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS) and sophomore Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) both finished with 230 totals to tie for 51st. Hayes fired rounds of 79-74-77 while Chapman carded 77-74-79.
Michigan has closed out its regular-season tournament schedule and will now prepare for the Big Ten Conference Championship, Friday through Sunday (May 5-7). The 2000 Championship will be hosted by Purdue University at the Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind.
