Pearson Honored by Hockey Coaches Association

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan associate head ice hockey coach Mel Pearson has been selected as the recipient of the 2000 Terry Flanagan Award by the American Hockey Coaches Association. The award recognizes an assistant coach's career body of work. Pearson will be recognized at the annual AHCA Coach of the Year and Awards Banquet on April 29 in Naples, Fla.
Pearson has been with the Wolverines for 12 seasons. Throughout his career, he has played an integral role in developing the Michigan hockey program into one of the most successful programs in the country. Pearson assists with the day-to-day coaching of the team and performs many of the team's administrative duties. He is also heavily active in recruiting.

Pearson graduated from Michigan Tech in 1981 and joined its staff the following season. He was with the Huskies through the 1987-88 season before joining the Wolverines in the fall of 1988.
The Terry Flanagan Award honors the former Bowling Green assistant coach who lost his battle with cancer in 1991. The Central Collegiate Hockey Association also presents an award in his honor to a player who has overcome personal adversity to become a leader on and off the ice. Michigan captain Sean Peach (Langley, B.C.) was honored with the award this season after battling back from career threatening concussions early as a sophomore.
