BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Despite inclement weather and two player disqualifications in the first round, the University of Michigan women's golf team still used consistent play to capture its fourth 10th-place team finish of the year at the Indiana Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, April 8-9. The Wolverines fired rounds of 337 and 325 to finish with an invitational total of 662.
Originally scheduled for 54 holes, the invitational was shortened to 36 holes (18 Saturday, 18 Sunday) by rainy and windy weather conditions. Host Indiana won the team title on its home course, firing a tournament-best 637 to finish two strokes ahead of runner-up Ohio State (639). The Hoosiers' Theresa McDermott won the individual title by just a single stroke with rounds of 77-76 for a 153 total. Indiana teammate Natalie Tucker and Wisconsin's Allie Blomquist tied as the tournament runner-up with totals of 154.
After Michigan started the first day off with consistent scores, junior Jennifer Baumann (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and sophomore Cortney Reno (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) were disqualified for improperly signing their scorecards. Reno rebounded on the second day with an 81, the team's second-lowest score of the day.
The Wolverines responded with solid second-round play as freshman Kim Benedict (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) led the charge, finishing in a tie for seventh after rounds of 83 and 76 for a 159 tournament total. Sophomore Bess Bowers (Bloomington, Ind./North HS) followed in a tie for 33rd after shooting rounds of 81 and 86 for a 167 finish. Sophomore Misia Lemanski (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) finished tied for 45th (84-85/169) and junior Trish Watkins (Darien, Conn./Darien HS) finished tied for 58th (89-83/172).
The Wolverines will head west to Iowa City, Iowa, to participate in their last tournament before the Big Ten Championship as they will play in the Hawkeye Invitational, April 15-16 at the Finkbine Golf Course.
