The Wolverines, currently ranked eighth in the nation, won the inaugural Big Ten Conference championship and the Central Region championship to finish the season ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Central Region.
For this year's championships, 10 teams were given team bids and invited to bring their first varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four boats. The top-ranked team from each of the four regions received an automatic bid, while the remaining six teams were selected at-large. In addition, nine institutions not already selected were invited to bring their first varsity eight boat and compete in the championships.
The nine other teams invited to the NCAA Championships are Boston University, Brown, California, Harvard, Michigan State, Ohio State, Princeton, Virginia and Washington. The first varsity eight boats of California-Davis, Northeastern, Oregon State, Southern California, Syracuse, Wesleyan (Conn.), Williams College, William Smith (N.Y.) and Yale also received bids.
Michigan returns to the rowing championships for the third time in four years as a varsity program. Each of the previous trips has resulted in a fifth-place finish as a team. Last year, the first varsity eight finished seventh, while the second varsity eight finished third and the varsity four finished fourth. Brown University won the team championship.
Tickets are available in either a three-day package for $15 or individual one-day passes (Friday and Saturday are $5 and Sunday is $7). To order, call 215-898-6151.
