VICTORIA, Texas -- The University of Michigan men's golf team continued to push forward at the 2000 NCAA Central Regional Championship, firing its fourth-best round of the season with a 286 team score in the second round at the Victoria Country Club today (Friday, May 19). With the Wolverines' first-round team total of 297 yesterday, they stand at 583 for the championship, which is good for a tie for 11th with Texas A&M, Kansas and Mississippi.
Senior Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS) recovered after a first-round 79 with a team-best second-round score of 69, giving him a 148 championship total and a tie for 55th overall. Sophomore Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central HS) followed Affeldt's lead as he rebounded from an opening round of 78, carding a 72 in the second to sit in a tie for 80th with a 150 total.
Junior/sophomore Kyle Kilcherman (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City HS) and senior Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) remained consistent during the second round. Kilcherman fired a 72, which is two strokes lower than his opening round of 74, putting him in a tie for 40th with a 146 championship total. Harris shot a 73 for the second straight day and is tied for 40th with a 146 total. Senior/junior Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS) slipped off the pace as he shot a second-round 76 after opening the championship with a 72, putting him in a tie for 55th with a 148 two-round score.
"We came back with a very solid round today," said U-M head coach Jim Carras. "It is simple. We have put ourselves in a position to do something very special and the guys know that. They control their own destinies. They have to come out and fire the best round in this tournament and frankly the best all year to keep this going. But I like our attitude and I like our chances."
Northwestern fired a 16-under-par 268 in the second round total to jump into the overall lead with a 564 team total. Oklahoma State carded a five-under 279 to move into second with a 567 total. Northwestern's Josh Habig fired a tournament-low 63 to take the lead with a 136 two-day total. Kent's Jon Mills and Texas A&M's Matt Lindholm are in second with 137 championship totals.
Michigan will conclude the NCAA Central Regional Championship on Saturday (May 20) with the 18-hole final round. The Wolverines are scheduled to begin at 8:42 a.m. CDT along with fellow competitors Texas A&M and Ohio State. Kilcherman plays first off the No. 1 tee for the Wolverines followed by Matthews (8:51), Affeldt (9:00), Hayes (9:09) and Harris (9:18). The top nine teams from the Central Regional and top two individuals not on a qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Championship (May 31-June 3) in Opelika, Ala.
