Wolverine Sprinters Shine at Toledo Invitational
5/6/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Track & Field
Derek Applewhite (Brighton, Colo./Brighton HS) led the way with a victory in the 110-meter hurdles in a personal-best and Michigan season-best time of 14.12. Applewhite was joined on the winner's stand by junior pole vaulter Charles DeWildt (Wyoming, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS), who won his event with a vault of 16-6. DeWildt's only challenger was teammate Brent Sheffer (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS), who placed second in the pole vault, also with a mark of 16-6.
Michigan's final individual winner was Nick Rogers (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm HS), who won the shot put for the third consecutive week, with a toss of 52-4 3/4. Rogers also set a Michigan season best and personal record in the discus with a heave of 167-1, which left him in second place. Perhaps the Wolverines' most impressive win of the day came from their 4x100-meter relay quartet, which won with a time of 40.54, almost four-tenths of a second better that the previous season best.
In addition to Applewhite and the 4x100-meter relay foursome, two other Michigan sprinters delivered team season bests. Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) placed third in the 200-meter dash with a Michigan season-best 21.23, while Josh Sellers (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee HS) placed runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles with a mark of 51.59. Sellers' time of 51.59 is a new personal record as well as Michigan season best. Senior Steve Molnar (Menominee, Mich./Menominee HS) also provided the sprint group with a solid effort as he blazed to a personal-best 10.77 in the 100-meter dash to place runner-up overall.
The Maize and Blue completes the regular-season portion of its outdoor schedule next weekend by hosting the Len Paddock Invitational on Friday and Saturday, May 12-13, at Ferry Field.
