Wolverines Finish Seventh at Big Ten Championship

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team closed out the 2000 Big Ten Conference Championship with a seventh-place overall finish. The Wolverines carded a final-round team total of 311 at Purdue University's Kampen Course today (Sunday, May 7) to finish with a 1,213 championship total.
Senior Michael Harris (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) continued to pace the way for the Maize and Blue during the final round as he finished fifth after shooting a 75. He finished the championship with a 293 total (70-73-75-75). For his efforts, Harris was named to the All-Big Ten Championship Team as well as being selected to the All-Big Ten Conference first team.
Senior/junior Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS) finished tied for 23rd with a 305 championship total after firing a final round of 81. Senior Mike Affeldt (Charlotte, N.C./Rochester [Mich.] Adams HS) had Michigan's lowest final-day score with a 74 and moved up nine spots to finish tied for 26th with a 306 championship total.
Sophomore Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) finished tied for 42nd after shooting an 81 for a 313 championship total and sophomore Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central HS) finished 47th after carding an 82 in the final round for a 315 championship total.
Northwestern held the lead for all four rounds of the championship and won its second straight Big Ten crown and sixth team championship. The Wildcats shot a final-round 290 to finish with the eighth best team finish ever, with a 1,160 team total. Northwestern won by 33 strokes over runner-up and host Purdue, which carded a final round of 296 to finish with a 1,193 championship total.
In a battle of Northwestern teammates, Luke Donald held off Jess Daley to win the individual medalist honors. Donald fired a 74 to win by one stroke over Daley, who fired a 75 in the final round. Donald finished with a tournament total of 287 (72-68-73-74) to Daley's 288 (66-70-77-75).
Michigan will have to wait until May 9 to see if it is selected to compete in the NCAA Central Regional Championship in Victoria, Texas, Thurday through Saturday, May 18-20). Six teams from District IV will qualify for the regional championship.
