Wisniewksi, Okenwa Close 2000 Season at NCAA Meet
6/1/2000 12:00:00 AM | Men's Track & Field
Michigan's other competitor in the NCAA Championships was sophomore sprinter Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS), who placed seventh in the first heat of the 100-meter dash preliminaries. Okenwa's time of 10.43 did not qualify him for Saturday's semifinal heats. Okenwa was attempting to become Michigan's first All-American in the 100-meter dash since Tom Robinson (1959-61) accomplished that feat in 1960.
Although Wisniewski finished in 13th place, the 10,000-meter run was a tight race throughout, evidenced by the fact that Wisniewski finished less than two-tenths of a second out of eighth place and All-America status. Wisniewski was trying to become Michigan's first All-American in the 10,000-meter run since Brad Barquest (1988-91) earned that honor with a third-place finish in 1991.
The NCAA Outdoor Championships mark the final meet of the 2000 Wolverine track and field campaign.
