"This is the best group of middle-distance runners we have recruited since I have been at Michigan," said head coach Ron Warhurst, who has been a coach in the U-M track program since 1974. "This group of middle-distance runners is the best we have recruited in terms of quantity and quality in the same season since I came to Michigan 26 years ago."
Michigan's top middle-distance runners in this class include Tom Greenless (Milford, Mich./Milford HS), John Hughes (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City Central HS), Ben Sage (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS), Brian Turner (Omaha, Neb./Millard North HS) and Mason Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain HS). Greenless recently finished fifth at the Foot Locker Outdoor National Scholastic meet in the 800-meter run (1:50.81), while Hughes placed ninth in the mile (4:12.57).
The Wolverines also expect to get immediate dividends in the long sprints from Jeremy Roberts (Toledo, Ohio/Whitmer HS). "In the 400-meter dash, Jeremy Roberts has a chance to help us a lot, and that help could come as soon as next year," stated Warhurst. "We are also excited about Matt Mason (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS), who will significantly improve us in the long and triple jumps."
Also included in the 2000 Michigan men's track and field recruiting class are William Austin (Marion, Mich./Marion HS), David Battani (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS), Anthony Beal (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS), Caleb Beasley (Romulus, Mich./Romulus HS), Braden Benninghoff (Buchanan, Mich./Buchanan HS), Andrew Martin (Belmont, Mich./Rockford HS) and Matt Moyer (Glenside, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS).
