7/5/2000 12:00:00 AM | General
The University of Michigan Athletic Department will continue to own the radio rights to the University of Michigan Radio Network, allowing WJR's radio broadcasts of Michigan football and men's basketball to reach the network of radio stations coordinated by U-M. The addition of WJR makes the U-M Radio Network one of the most powerful in the Midwest, reaching listeners in up to 38 states and a large portion of eastern Canada.
The U-M Radio Network will include at least 40 radio stations throughout the country that will be able to pick up Michigan football and men's basketball feeds through WJR's broadcast and satellite capabilities. The final list of affiliates of the U-M Radio Network will be forthcoming.
"We're extremely happy to continue our relationship with the University of Michigan," said WJR President and General Manager Michael Fezzey. "The overall success of the Wolverine athletic program was displayed this past year when the school placed third in the Sears Cup competition. Like WJR, Michigan's overall commitment to excellence makes this a perfect partnership."
WJR's broadcasts of Michigan football will begin one hour before kickoff with a pregame show and last at least one hour following the conclusion of the game. Broadcasts of men's basketball contests will begin 50 minutes prior to game time with a pregame show and last at least 30 minutes after the conclusion of the contest.
"Once again, we are happy to have WJR as part of our University of Michigan Radio Network," said Michigan Interim Director of Athletics Bill Martin. "The 50,000-watt clear channel station and quality programming it provides allows Michigan fans throughout the Midwest great access to our gameday coverage."
In addition to game broadcasts, WJR will air a coaches show a minimum of twice per week during both the Michigan football and men's basketball seasons as well as provide a weekly feature related to Michigan football during the football season. The Michigan football features will air for one hour during WJR's Sportswrap program on a date and time to be mutually agreed upon.
