ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Freshman Ian Hirschfield (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest HS) etched his name into University of Michigan men's soccer history with the program's first shot. Just 4:36 into the Wolverines' first match as a varsity program, Hirschfield lofted a ball into the upper right corner of DePaul's goal. The 30-foot shot was just over the reach of DePaul goalkeeper Jash Chavero. The goal was enough to give Michigan a 1-0 win in its inaugural game in front of 1,487 on Friday (Sept. 1) at Elbel Field.
Earning the shutout for the Wolverines was senior goalkeeper Albert Geldres (St. Clair, Mich./Detroit Country Day School). Geldres made six saves, including a diving stop at the 65:00 mark to preserve the shutout.
The Wolverines (1-0, 0-0 Big Ten) controlled the tempo of the game. Despite being outshot 16-8, Michigan's defense limited the Blue Demons (0-1) to only six scoring chances. DePaul's offensive frustrations led to 30 fouls and three yellow cards in the game.
Senior Will Purdy (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett Catholic Central HS) led the Michigan offense with three shots, including two on goal in the beginning of the second half.
The Wolverines travel to Cleveland State next Tuesday (Sept. 5) at 7 p.m. for their second game.
