The Michigan Lineup
The Wolverines will carry five players for the Michigan squad at the Northern Intercollegiate. Fifth-year senior Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS) and redshirt freshman Scott Carlton (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) head up the squad. Juniors Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) and Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) fill up the middle portion of the team card. Freshman David Nichols (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) makes his collegiate debut in the fifth spot for the Wolverines.
The Last Northern Intercollegiate
After a year's hiatus, the Wolverines return for the Northern Intercollegiate. The last time Michigan competed in the Northern Intercollegiate was during the 1998-99 season, when it was held in Falcon Heights, Minn., at the Les Bolstad Golf Club (Sept. 18-19, 1998). The Wolverines entered Saturday's final-round action tied for fourth place with Penn State with a 1-over-par 569 after firing rounds of 285-284. However, a score of 300 on the final round dropped Michigan four spots into eighth place with an 869 total. Michael Harris (1996-2000) was one of three golfers to fire a low-round 64 during the 54-hole event, and he led Michigan with a 3-under-par 210 total to tie for 11th place among 66 competitors. His 7-under 64 came in the second round, sandwiched between rounds of 72 and 74. Andy Matthews carded an even-par 213 and tied for 20th, Scott Hayes tied for 36th at 219, Kyle Kilcherman (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) tied for 57th at 227, and Michael Affeldt (1996-2000) tied for 59th at 228.
Michigan Rebounds to Finish Fourth at Wolverine North
Michigan continued its fall season by hosting the Wolverine North Invitational (Sept. 23-24) and used a solid final round to move up to fourth place. The Wolverines carded team rounds of 289-299-293 for an 881 team total. Redshirt freshman Scott Carlton made his collegiate debut for the Wolverines and led the way for the Maize and Blue squad as he finished tied for seventh after carding rounds of 69-76-73 for a 218 total. Scott Hayes and Andrew Chapman both finished tied for 12th. Hayes finished with rounds of 71-74-76 for a 221 total and Chapman carded descending rounds of 76-74-71. Andy Matthews was 15th after his rounds of 73-75-74 for a 222 total and Kyle Kilcherman tied for 46th (79-76-75/230).
Carlton Makes Collegiate Debut, Smiles the Entire Way
No one could remove the smile from redshirt freshman Scott Carlton's face as he made his collegiate debut at the Wolverine North Invitational. He led the Michigan team to a fourth-place finish and tied for seventh individually after rounds of 69-76-73 for a 218 total. Carlton's career-best total of 69 in the first round marks the first time this season a Wolverine player has broken the 70-stroke barrier. His 218 career-best total was also the team's second best 54-hole total this season. Teammate Scott Hayes shot a 213 at the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational (Sept. 18-19).
Consistency the Key for the Andys
Juniors Andrew Chapman and Andy Matthews have learned that the key to success as a team and as an individual is through consistency. At the Wolverine North Invitational, Chapman opened with a disappointing 76 but descended from there carding rounds of 74 and a season best 71 in the final two rounds to finish tied for 12th. Matthews also remained strong and consistent, recording rounds of 73-75-74 to also tie for 12th at the Wolverine North. With both Andys averaging below last year's final total, they continue to be the strong middle for the lineup with their consistent play.
Freshman Nichols to Make Collegiate Debut
For the second week in a row a Wolverine will make his collegiate debut. This time true freshman David Nichols will travel to Urbana, Ill., to get a taste of college and Big Ten golf at the Northern Intercollegiate. Nichols was a four-year varsity letterwinner at Rochester Adams High School. He was a four-time All-League selection, an All-State Super Team selection in 1998 and 1999. He was also an All-State first team selection in 1997 and shot a school-record 67 during his junior season only to break it his senior year with a 65.
Roster Takes Shape
Coach Jim Carras spent the past few weeks sifting through qualifying round scorecards trying to determine who would make up the final 10 roster spots. With the completion of the Wolverine North Invitational, Carras has finished his decisions. Senior Scott Hayes and juniors Andrew Chapman, Andy Matthews, Kyle Kilcherman all return from last season's starting squad. Redshirt freshman Scott Carlton has been impressive early. Senior Kevin Hinton (Port Huron, Mich./Northern HS) and redshirt junior Brian Seipke (Suttons Bay, Mich./Traverse City Senior HS) add experience and leadership. After strong qualifying performances, redshirt freshman Chris Kellogg (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS), true freshman David Nichols and Rob Tighe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) round out the top 10.
Hayes Takes Home Inverness Intercollegiate Title
Senior Scott Hayes began his 2000-01 campaign by winning medalist honors for the first time in his career, at the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational (Sept. 18-19) in Toledo, Ohio. The win was one for the books as Hayes and Fresno State sophomore Nick Watney battled for the Invitational title both days, playing all 54 holes paired together. Watney held a two-stroke lead after the first day, but Hayes fired a closing 70 to tie Watney. The medalist was determined by the first step of the scorecard playoff as Hayes' back-nine total of 34 was two shots better than Watney's 36. Hayes carded rounds of 71-72-70 for an even-par 213 total, while Watney shot 68-73-72.
Could This Just Be the Beginning of a Repeat
Last season Michael Harris won the Falcon-Cross Creek Invitational (Sept. 18-19, 1999) to open the 1999-2000 season. Exactly a year later, Scott Hayes won the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational (Sept. 18-19, 2000) to open the 2000-01 season. If this trend continues the Wolverines could be in for another successful season as the 1999-2000 squad went on to win two team titles, collect four individual titles and advance to the NCAA Central Regional Championship -- only to miss by four strokes qualifying for the NCAA Championship.
