BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- The Michigan men's soccer team lost a 2-0 decision on Thursday (Sept. 28) against host Bowling Green State University. The Wolverines had more shots on goal than the Falcons (8-6), but were unable to get any in the net. Both goals were scored in the first 24 minutes of the game.
Bowling Green (3-5) quickly attacked the Michigan defense in the first half. Off a corner kick at the 17:24 minute mark, Derick Matthews knocked a header past senior goalkeeper Albert Geldres (St. Clair, Mich./Detroit Country Day School) for an early 1-0 lead. Six minutes later (23:23) the Falcons struck again when Fred Degand put another header into the far post to increase the lead to 2-0. Bowling Green's defense kept the Wolverines (3-4) to only three shots in the first half and went into halftime with a two-goal lead.
Michigan came out in the second half with more firepower on offense. The Wolverines racked up 10 shots, seven of which were on goal. However, the Falcons were tough in goal, led by David DeGraff with seven saves on the night. Michigan's offense controlled the tempo in the second half, limiting Bowling Green with only one scoring opportunity for the half.
The Wolverines' next match is the Soccer Alumni Game on Saturday (Sept. 30) at Elbel Field at 10 a.m. This is the final exhibition game for the men's soccer team this season.
