Wolverines Rebound with 6-2 Victory over Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- A three-goal second period helped vindicate the University of Michigan ice hockey team with a 6-2 thumping of the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday night (Jan. 13) in front of 13,308 at Value City Arena. The victory moved No. 8-ranked Michigan into a tie for second place with Western Michigan, setting up next weekend's showdown with the Broncos.
Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) opened the scoring for the Maize and Blue when he was fed at the front of the net by Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) at 10:34 of the first period. The lead did not last long as OSU's Scott May tied the score at one apiece 58 seconds later, and the period ended at 1-1.
The Wolverines came out firing in the second period, scoring three goals and holding the Buckeyes scoreless in the session. Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) put the Maize and Blue up 2-1 on a goal set up by Hilbert and Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) at 4:26. Then Scott Matzka won a draw and Koch moved the puck to Jeff Jillson (N. Smithfield, R.I.), who fired it past Buckeye goaltender Mike Betz. Koch completed the statement second period by the Wolverines with a goal with five and half minutes remaining to put U-M up 4-1.
Ohio State cut the Michigan lead to 4-2 in the third period, but Matzka and Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) put the game out of reach with goals at 10:51 and 14:45, respectively, to solidify the Michigan victory. Goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) made 27 saves to raise his record to 15-6-3.
Michigan (16-6-3, 10-4-1 CCHA) will have a home-at-home showdown with No. 5 Western Michigan -- which tied Notre Dame 3-3 tonight -- next weekend in a battle the second-place teams in the CCHA. The teams, each with 21 points, will try to gain some ground on Michigan State, which leads the CCHA with 24 points. Friday's game (Jan. 19) will be played at Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor at 7:35 p.m., with Saturday's contest at Lawson Ice Arena in Kalamazoo at 7:05 p.m.
