ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team had its individual title aspirations dashed today (Sunday, Jan. 14) at the Big Ten Conference Singles Championships held at the Varsity Tennis Center, with junior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and freshman Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) losing matches in main draw round of 16. The three-day tournament concludes tomorrow morning with the semifinals (8:30 a.m.) and finals (11:30 a.m.) for both draws.

The Wolverines finished competition in the main draw, but sophomores Chris Rolf (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) and Jeremy Edelson (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) remain active in the 7-8-9 players consolation draw. Rolf and Edelson advanced to tomorrow morning's consolation semifinal with three straight wins after opening the tournament with setbacks.

In main-draw action, Beam was upset by ninth-seeded Milan Rakvica of Indiana (6-2, 6-2), ending the fourth-seeded player's tournament with a 2-1 record. Jackson took seventh-seeded Philip Stolt of Illinois to three sets before falling 6-4, 3-6, 7-5. Jackson finished with a 2-1 mark.

Juniors Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School) and Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) rebounded from opening-round losses in the main draw before falling in consolation third-round action. Both players finished with 2-2 marks.
