STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team tied No. 6 Oklahoma 19-19 and won a tiebreaker to take fifth place in the 2001 Cliff Keen National Duals on Sunday (Jan. 21) at Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center. The Wolverines, who earlier in the day lost 22-16 to No. 4 Iowa State, matched their best-ever finish in six appearances in the National Duals.
In a match for fifth place, Oklahoma led 13-3 after five matches, but 165-pounder Charles Martelli (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) pinned Brian Burrows at 4:27 to start the comeback and bring the Wolverines within four points, 13-9. Oklahoma regain its 10-point lead when Mike Barger pinned top-ranked Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS) at 1:52, handing Olson his first loss of the season.
Down 19-9, Michigan captured the final three matches to forge the 19-19 tie, and the Wolverines were awarded fifth place based on the ninth tiebreaker (number of reversals). Andy Hrovat (Gates Mills, Ohio/St. Edwards HS) started the strong finish with a 13-3 major decision over Josh Lembrecht at 184, Joe DeGain (White Lake, Mich./Clarkston HS) edged Waymon May 2-1 at 197, and heavyweight Matt Brink (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport HS) shut out Leonce Crump 3-0 to tie the score.
Against Iowa State in the consolation fourth round, 125-pounder A.J. Grant (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) gave U-M a 4-0 lead with his major decision (19-5) over Jacob Moore. The Cyclones won the next two weight classes and led 6-4, but Mike Kulczycki (N. Royalton, Ohio/St. Edwards HS) managed a 12-8 decision over Benjie Windgardner to put the Wolverines up 7-6.
U-M lost the next two matches and was down 13-7 until Olson beat Perry Parks 6-5, bringing the Maize and Blue within three points, 13-10. However, ISU's top-ranked 184-pounder Cael Sanderson pinned Hrovat and Zach Thompson edged DeGain 3-2 at 197 to give the Cyclones an insurmountable 22-10 lead, allowing ISU to forfeit the heavyweight bout.
The Maize and Blue is on the road again next weekend to begin its Big Ten schedule. The Wolverines will face No. 2 Minnesota, which upset No. 1 Oklahoma State 20-12 for the National Duals title, on Friday (Jan. 26, 7:30 p.m.) in Minneapolis and No. 10 Michigan State on Sunday (Jan. 28, 1 p.m.) in East Lansing.
