ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team open its indoor season at the U-M Indoor Track and Field Building today (Saturday, Jan. 6) with the Jack Harvey Invitational. The Wolverines turned in several top finishes in the non-scoring meet.
Michigan won five of the events, all on the track. However, several U-M athletes were competing unattached. The excitement of the day was highlighted by a photo finish in the 60-meter dash. Junior Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) won the race by one-hundredth of a second, matching his personal best (6.79) to nip Gerald Rasool of Eastern Michigan.
Senior Ravi Smith (Southfield, Mich./Lathrup HS) took the 200 with a time of 22.88, while junior Kevin Lamb (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett HS) won the 400 at 50.06. In the 800, the Wolverines took the top three spots, with junior Jeremy Schneider (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Andover HS) taking the crown (1:54.39).
In the lone relay of the day, Michigan was victorious in the 1,600-meter relay. U-M (3:20.46), was out in front the whole time and held off a last-minute surge from Eastern Michigan.
Assistant coach Kevin Sullivan also took part in the action, running for Reebok in the 3,000-meter run. Sullivan (8:14.67) took control of the race, despite a strong effort from junior Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS), who came in second.
The Wolverines will continue their season next Saturday (Jan. 13), hosting Indiana for a dual meet at the U-M Track Building, beginning at 9:30 a.m.
