IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team dropped its third consecutive Big Ten contest in a row, losing 79-58 to Iowa Sunday afternoon, Jan. 7, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Junior Alayne Ingram (Lansing, Mich./Waverly HS) led Michigan with 12 points, including 2-6 from beyond the arc.
Iowa (7-7, 2-2 Big Ten) scored the first four points of the game before a mid-range jumper from Ingram put the Wolverines on the scoreboard. Six early points from Michigan center LeeAnn Bies (Lakeview, Mich./Lakeview HS) kept the Wolverines close and tied the score at 14 apiece with 11 minutes remaining the first half. However, Iowa answered with a 13-0 run to take a 27-14 lead.
A driving layup in the paint from Anne Thorius (Horsholm, Denmark/Rungsted Gymnasium) ended the Iowa run, and after a pair of buckets from Stephanie Gandy (Detroit, Mich./Northern HS), Michigan had completed an 8-0 run of its own to cut its deficit to five at 27-22. A triple from Ingram, however, was all Michigan could muster the rest of the first stanza as Iowa closed it on a 9-3 run to take a 36-25 advantage into the intermission. The Wolverines shot just .387 (12-31) from the field in the first half, while Iowa shot .531 (17-32). Michigan's 12 first-half turnovers also contributed to the 11-point deficit.
Michigan (8-6, 1-3 Big Ten) came out of the locker room strong and rattled off the first six points of the half to cut the lead to five at 36-31 and force an Iowa timeout. Iowa immediately answered, however, with a 14-2 run to take control of the game and lead 50-33 with less than 12 minutes remaining in the contest. Iowa slowly stretched its lead to as much as 23 (59-36) and the Wolverines were unable to mount a serious challenge to the 23-point deficit.
Freshman Christie Schumacher (Milford, Mich./Milford HS) came off the bench to knock down a pair of jumpers, while sophomore Infini Robinson (Detroit, Mich./Oak Park HS) drilled a triple, but Michigan could only get as close as 17. Iowa eventually earned a 79-58 win thanks to .515 (34-66) shooting from the field and .471 (8-17) shooting from beyond the arc.
The Wolverines return to action Thursday (Jan. 11) when they host nationally ranked Penn State at 7 p.m. in Crisler Arena.

On the Michigan team ... "We are a struggling basketball team right now and we need to find people who can score. I played a lot of different people today because I am trying to find someone who is not afraid to take an open look and if you miss it, stay confident and come right back. The best part is we get to come back and play and practice and try to get this fixed."
