ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The eighth-ranked Michigan ice hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Lake Superior State University with a 5-0 win Sunday (Jan. 7) at Yost Ice Arena. Combined with Friday's (Jan. 5) 2-0 victory over the Lakers, Sunday's shutout marks the first time since 1964 that Michigan have posted back-to-back shutout wins, and the first time since the 1926-27 season that the Wolverines have shut out the same opponent twice on the same weekend.
Michigan (15-5-3, 9-3-1 CCHA) opened the scoring midway through the first period on a power-play goal from Craig Murray (Penticton, B.C.). During a scramble in front of the Laker net, Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) flipped a backhand pass to Murray, who was perched at the right post. Murray gathered the puck and deked past LSSU goalie Jayme Platt before sliding the puck into the net to give U-M a 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines extended their lead 3:50 into the second period on Andy Hilbert's (Howell, Mich.) 15th goal of the season. Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) won the faceoff to the left of the LSSU goal and drew the puck back to Hilbert before his shot along the ice found its way through traffic into the net, giving U-M a 2-0 lead. The play also increased both players' consecutive game scoring streak. Hilbert has now scored in his last 10 games, while Cammalleri has tallied at least one point in each of his last nine games.
Hilbert and Cammalleri teamed up again with 5:40 left in the second period to push the Michigan lead to 3-0. Cammalleri found Hilbert between the circles where Hilbert took a shot that beat Platt, giving him his second goal of the game and increasing Cammalleri's assist total to 18 on the season.
Murray added an unassisted goal 4:55 into the third period to give the Wolverines a 4-0 lead. Murray's performance marked the second time in his career he scored twice in the same game, dating back to Jan. 15, 2000, against Miami (Ohio) when he finished with two goals.
Cammalleri rounded out the scoring with a goal late in the third period. Goalie Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) added an assist on Cammalleri's goal, giving him four on the season and nine for his career. Defensively, Blackburn picked up his seventh shutout of his career and third of the year, making 20 saves to improve his record to 14-5-3 on the season. Platt made 26 saves for the Lakers and suffered the loss, dropping his record to 9-13-0.
The Wolverines travel to Columbus, Ohio, next weekend for a series against Ohio State Friday and Saturday (Jan. 12-13).

Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On Michigan's defensive effort ... "We had our forwards back, which gave our defense more confidence to stand up and identify their man. This weekend our forwards were coming back and doing a better job. It stands with the forwards. All the little things we weren't doing last week, we got back into our game."
On the return of Andy Hilbert, Mike Cammalleri and Mike Komisarek ... "You can see our team is more complete when we have Hilbert and Cammalleri up front and Komisarek on defense. They are some of the pieces of the puzzle, but they're pieces that made our team look like a different one."
Sophomore Defenseman Mike Roemensky
On the defensive effort ... "Two shutouts is huge for (Josh) Blackburn. He deserves it. He stood on his head this weekend. A lot of credit goes to the forwards as well as the defense. The forwards are just like our third defenseman, coming back all the time. Every shift we had at least one forward coming back. It allows us to stand up on the blue line."
Sophomore Forward Mike Cammalleri
On returning to the team from the World Junior Championship ... "It's great to be back. Playing at Yost is like no other. Going over and having that experience makes you appreciate what we have here Michigan."
