COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team suffered its first loss in the Big Ten Conference on Friday afternoon (Oct. 12) with a 2-1 defeat at No. 10 Ohio State. The win moves Ohio State (10-2, 4-0 Big Ten) into sole possession of first place in the Big Ten, while Michigan (10-3, 3-1 Big Ten) falls into a second-place tie with No. 7 Michigan State, which won 3-2 in two overtimes at Indiana on Friday.
Freshman Jessica Blake (Perth, W. Australia/St. Mary's Anglican Girls School) netted her first goal of the season with 22:03 left in the second half on a penalty corner for the Wolverines' lone score of the game. Sophomore Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) and senior Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, South Australia/Westminster School) earned their fourth and ninth assists on the play, respectively. The assist for Foreman gives her 53 for her career, three shy of tying Courtney Reid (1997-2000) for the school record.
Ohio State managed the first and last goals of the game, with the decisive tally coming from freshman Lorena Margni with 12:20 left in the game. The Buckeyes' initial goal came from sophomore Vanessa Immordino, who scored her team-high 12th goal of the year with 17:53 remaining in the first half.
Michigan's next game will be on Sunday (Oct. 14) when it will face No. 12 Ohio University in a 1 p.m. non-conference contest in Athens, Ohio.
