This Week
The University of Michigan women's soccer team (5-4, 3-1 Big Ten) continues its Big Ten Conference schedule with a pair of road contests. On Friday (Oct. 5) the Wolverines travel to Columbus, Ohio, where they will face the Ohio State Buckeyes (6 p.m.) at the Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. On Sunday (Oct. 7) U-M will head to State College, Pa., to take on the No. 8-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions (3 p.m.) at Jeffrey Field.
Scouting the Opponents
Ohio State -- The Buckeyes are 3-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the Big Ten Conference, having lost to Indiana 2-1 Friday (Sept. 28) but defeating Purdue 1-0 on Monday (Oct. 1). (The Buckeyes had their game against Purdue postponed until Monday so the entire team and coaching staff could attend a memorial service for Ohio State men's soccer freshman Connor Senn. Senn died late Wednesday evening at Akron City Hospital from an "unspecified cardiac event" following an injury he sustained in the Ohio State vs. Akron match.) OSU is currently on a five-game losing streak with Big Ten losses to Indiana (2-1) and Minnesota (2-1). Against U-M, the Buckeyes are 3-6, which includes last season's 3-1 loss to the Wolverines in Ann Arbor. Leading the Ohio State squad is forward Lisa Grubb, who has three goals and one assist for seven points on 22 shots. Lindsay Eckles also has three goals for OSU. Penn State -- The No. 8 Nittany Lions are 6-2-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the Big Ten. PSU has recorded wins against Minnesota (4-0) and Indiana (4-1) and tied Michigan State (1-1). Penn State has outscored its opponents this season 30-11. Last season PSU defeated the Wolverines in the regular season (2-1) and in the Big Ten Tournament championship game after three overtime periods (1-0). The tournament win evened up the Lions' championship game record with U-M (1-1) after the Wolverines took the title in 1999, winning 4-2. Penn State leads the all-time series 6-3-3. PSU is led by Christie Welsh (nine goals, six assists, 24 points) and Heidi Drummon (six goals, three assists, 15 points). Penn State on the Internet: www.gopsusports.com.
Last Week
U-M rebounded from its 1-1 Big Ten-opening weekend with two shutouts at home. On Friday (Sept. 28) Michigan won over Northwestern (2-0) and also shut out Wisconsin (1-0 OT) on Sunday (Sept. 30). The game against Northwestern saw the Wolverines play tight defense, limiting the Wildcats to just six shots. A team save midway through the second half sparked the Wolverine offense as it controlled the ball in the Northwestern end. U-M had numerous scoring opportunities and finally capitalized at 36:48 when freshman Theresa Dwyer (Metairie, La./Mt. Carmel Academy) scored from inside the box on a ball that had ricocheted off a Northwestern player in the left corner. Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) assisted on the play. The win improved U-M's all-time home record against Northwestern to 2-1-1. U-M is now 7-2-1 in the all-time series.
As expected, Wisconsin played a tough physical match from the first whistle and collected two yellow cards, one red card and 18 fouls. The Badgers' red card, which resulted in ejection, with 26:25 left in the game played to U-M's advantage as it was able to get more shots on goal and tire out the Wisconsin defense heading into the overtime. Carly Williamson (Barrington, R.I./Barrington HS) had the first scoring chance for U-M after receiving a pass from Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) but was unable to score. Finally Liz Dosa (Piedmont, Calif./Piedmont HS) was able to get a clear pass off to sophomore Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS), who then dribbled through the Badger defense for the game-winning goal with 4:29 left in the overtime. The win gave U-M goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) her third consecutive shutout and fourth of the year. Grech made eight saves against Wisconsin and four against Northwestern.

Super Sophomore
Sophomore Stephanie Chavez scored her first goal of the season in U-M's overtime match against Wisconsin (Sept. 30). Chavez also got the game-winner in U-M's double overtime win over Miami (4-3) in last season's NCAA Championship first-round match, Michigan's last overtime game.
Michigan 4, Opponents 0
U-M's 1-0 win over Wisconsin was its third consecutive shutout since losing at Illinois (Sept. 21). Michigan has outshot its opponents 47-27 and outscored them 4-0.
Back-to-Back-to-Back
This year's squad is the first in the program's eight years to record three consecutive shutouts resulting in three wins. In 1997, the Wolverines tied Penn State (0-0) and defeated Wright State (6-0) and Toledo (5-0). U-M has recorded back-to-back shutouts seven times since 1994.
Suzie Shutout
Suzie Grech is more than halfway to becoming the U-M single-season shutout leader. Grech has recorded four this year and has nine games remaining to set the record. Carissa Stewart (1997-2000) holds the single-season mark with seven.
Fabulous Freshmen
The 2001 freshmen have combined for five goals, three assists and 13 points this season. Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) scored U-M's lone goal against Kentucky (Sept. 7), the first of her career and opened up the scoring in Michigan's 4-0 win over Detroit (Sept. 17). Laney Rosin (Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton HS) got her first goal against Detroit as well. Morgan capped U-M's 2-0 win over Northwestern (Sept. 28) and Theresa Dwyer's first goal as a Wolverine was the game-winner against Northwestern. Liz Dosa hasn't scored yet, despite her six shots on goal, but assisted on perhaps U-M's biggest goal of the year -- Stephanie Chavez's overtime winner against Wisconsin.
