ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team suffered its first overtime loss since the 1998-99 season, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Northern Michigan on Friday (Oct. 26) in the opener of a two-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association series at Yost Ice Arena.
Northern Michigan, which is one of only two schools in the CCHA with a winning record at Yost, ended the game at the 53-second mark in overtime when sophomore defenseman Ryan Carrigan took a pass from Justin Kinnunuen and wristed a shot over the glove of Michigan goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) from the top of the left faceoff circle. Northern, which has taken the Wolverines to overtime in four of the last seven meetings, owns a 7-5-0 mark in Ann Arbor.
Blackburn stopped 23 of Northern Michigan's 24 shots in the win, while Craig Kowalski stopped all of 28 shots to earn his second career shutout victory, both of which have occurred against the Wolverines. Michigan outshot the Wildcats 28-24 and held NMU to a single shot on goal in regulation's final period.
The Wolverines will return to the ice Saturday night (Oct. 27) for a rematch against Northern Michigan. Opening faceoff is slated for 7:35 p.m.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "We knew it'd be a close game and it would be a tight game but obviously you didn't think it would come down to a 0-0 tie after 60 minutes. I think both these teams can score goals but both these goalies were at the top of their game and made some big saves. It was a disappointing game to lose. I thought we played well. I can't tell you I thought we deserved to win, but they're a good team and they played hard and they took advantage of the chance they needed. It was disappointing, but I thought we were fighting. Our power play couldn't connect when they needed to but our penalty killers did a good job on their power plays so it was a close, close game."
On the team's chances ..."I think both teams did a good job of going to the net, and it makes it tough for the defensemen but it was a high-energy game from the ice level. We couldn't capitalize on our chances. We had two or three very good chances in the game and so did they, but it was a goalie's game."
On Michigan's defensive play ... "We need to play like that every night and obviously you need to find a way to win these games too. I thought (Josh) Blackburn had his best game of the season. It was a strong goalkeeping performance and I still think we have to play better defensively in front."
Senior Goaltender Josh Blackburn
On the game-winning goal ... "It came out from behind the net and I didn't see the actual shot. I tried to get a good angle and get out there but I didn't see it."
On his play ... "Last week (against Western Michigan) I didn't play such a good game Saturday night and we won. It kind of goes back and forth and I know I'll be ready to play tomorrow. It's a frustrating loss; every overtime loss is."
On the team's slow start ... "We just have to go back to basics, do the things that work for us, play Michigan hockey. That's what we have to do every night."
Freshman Defenseman Brandon Rogers
On the defense's play ... "We're trying to keep a defensive mindset. We're trying to get everything out of the zone and everything in deep so that we wouldn't have any turnovers at either blue line."
On the penalty kill ... "Everybody is working hard out there. ... The energy that we created to make good plays carried us throughout the whole game. It worked out well."
N O T E S
Tonight's loss for Michigan is its first in overtime since March 27, 1999, when New Hampshire defeated the Wolverine 2-1 in the NCAA East Regional final in Worcester, Mass. Before tonight's loss, Michigan had a streak of 14 overtime games without a loss, with a record of 4-0-10.
Michigan and Northern Michigan have gone into overtime in four of the last seven meetings, the only four extra-stanza games in the 29-game history of the series. U-M is 0-1-3 in overtime games against NMU.
Northern Michigan owns a 7-5-0 record against Michigan at Yost Ice Arena and is one of two teams in the CCHA that own winning records at Yost Ice Arena. Lake Superior State is the other, with a 16-13-3 record in Ann Arbor.
NMU goaltender Craig Kowalski posted his second career shutout, both of which have come against the Wolverines.
Northern has shut out Michigan in each of the last two meetings, including a 2-0 blanking on Feb. 10, 2001.
With the win, Northern remains the only team in the CCHA that has not been swept in a two-game weekend series.
