U-M Completes Competition at ITA Midwest Regional

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team completed competition at the 2001 ITA Omni Hotels Midwest Regional Championships held this weekend (Oct. 26-28) at the MSU Tennis Facility. The Wolverines sent five players into singles competition and two teams into the doubles field, with three singles competitors comprising the final 16 players in the tournament.
Seniors Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) and freshman Matt Lockin (Lilburn, Ga./North Dakota Independent Study) all played their way into the round of 16 before losing matches.
Beam, seeded 12th in the tournament, posted a 2-1 mark after having a first-round bye. He won a pair of tie-breakers against Indiana's Rahman Smiley and tallied a three-set victory against Ohio State's Adrian Bohane before falling to third-seeded Harsch Mankad of Minnesota in straight sets.
Cox registered a 3-1 tournament record after being taken to three sets in the first round by Michigan State's Cameron Marshall (1-6, 6-1, 6-2). Cox upset sixth-seeded Jevgeni Carlov of DePaul and followed up with another straight-set victory over Northwestern's Jamie Sahara in the round of 32. Cox had his tournament come to an end in the round of 16, falling to 13th-seeded Javier Taborga of Notre Dame.
Lockin turned in an impressive showing by posting a 3-1 tournament mark. He opened with a 7-6, 6-4 victory against Iowa's Petar Mandic and proceeded to upset fifth-seeded Casey Smith of Notre Dame in the second round (7-6, 6-4). Lockin kept the strong play going with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Northern Illinois' Raymond van Wasbeek before falling to ninth-seeded Thomas Haug of Minnesota (6-3, 6-3).
Senior Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) split two singles matches while sophomore Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) lost in the first round of competition.
In doubles action, juniors Chris Shaya (Farmington Hills, Mich./Saddle Brook Academy, Fla.) and Chris Rolf (Midland, Mich./Midland HS) posted a 1-1 tournament mark, with the setback coming 8-6 to ninth-seeded Laith Al-Agba and Carl McCafferty of Purdue. Novak and Lockin lost in the first round.
