U-M Completes Fall at Big Ten Singles Championship

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team completed the fall slate by competing at 2001 Big Ten Singles Championships held Saturday through Monday (Nov. 10-12) at MSU Tennis Facility. Senior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and freshman Matt Lockin (Lilburn, Ga./N.D. Independent Study) posted 3-1 tournament records and reached the quarterfinals before losing.
Beam, seeded third in the tournament, breezed through the first three rounds in impressive fashion before falling 6-4, 6-4 to Minnesota's Avery Ticer. Beam opened with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Iowa's Matis Jasicek, kept things rolling with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Michigan State's Jimmy McGuire and reached the quarterfinals by tallying a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Northwestern's Josh Axler.
Lockin opened by posting a first-round upset of fourth-seeded Jackie Jenkins of Northwestern (6-2, 7-5). He continued his impressive play with a 6-4, 6-4 win against Purdue's Laith Al-Agba and reached the quarterfinals by defeating Minnesota's Manuel Lievano in three sets (3-6, 6-3, 6-0). Lockin lost in a three-set battle with Illinois' Jamal Parker (7-6, 5-7, 7-6).
Sophomore Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) put together an impressive tournament, posting a 2-2 record. Jackson opened with a victory over eighth-seeded Adrian Bohane of Ohio State before dropping a second-round match to Northwestern's Thomas Hanus. Jackson split a pair of consolation matches, beating Wisconsin's Justin Baker (6-4, 6-3) and losing to Northwestern's Jamie Sahara (7-5, 3-6, 7-5).
In the No. 7 and 8 players bracket, freshman Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) reached the semifinals before losing 7-6, 6-4 to Northwestern's Ahmed Wahla. Gossain posted a 2-1 mark with victories against Penn State's Clint Keithlev (6-2, 6-4) and Indiana's Efriam Kandinov (6-7, 6-0, 6-3).
