Wolverines Skate to Wild Tie at No. 7 Nebraska-Omaha

OMAHA, Neb. -- In a fast-paced and exciting game which included three lead changes, the No. 13-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team scored two goals in the final 2:30 minutes to salvage a 4-4 tie with No. 7 Nebraska-Omaha on Friday (Nov. 16) before 8,314 fans at the Omaha Civic Center.
With 2:28 left in the game, the Wolverines were on the power play while trailing 4-2. With Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) planted in front of goalie Dan Ellis, U-M goal-scoring leader Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) ripped a shot high into the net to close the gap to 4-3.
Only moments after their third goal, the Wolverines appeared to tie the game on a shot by Wolverine David Moss (Dearborn, Mich.) during a scrum in front of the net. However, referee Brent Shegos waved off the goal, claiming that Mavericks netminder Dan Ellis had covered the puck before Moss gained possession.
The Wolverines would only need one more chance as they tied the score 4-4 with only 37 seconds left in the game. With goaltender Josh Blackburn (Chocktaw, Okla.) pulled for the extra attacker, Michigan found themselves on an odd-man rush after Maverick players had attempted to score on Michigan's empty net. Eric Nystrom (Syosset, N.Y.) slid a pass across to the left side as the Omaha native Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) corralled the puck, spun and scored to tie the game.
Michigan found themselves in the predicament after allowing three third-period goals, two from David Brisson and one from Aaron Smith. Michigan had been leading 2-1 entering the third period and was 4-0-1 this season when entering the third period with a lead.
In the first period, Nebraska-Omaha tallied the opening goal of the game on a rebound score from Jeff Filewich on a shot by Andrew Wong. The night's second lead change came in the form of goals from Jason Ryznar (Anchorage, Ala.) and Cammalleri during the second period of play.
Although both teams had power-play opportunities and numerous scoring chances in the overtime frame, neither club could muster the decisive blow.
The two teams will skate again Saturday (Nov. 17, 7:05 p.m. CST) at the Omaha Civic Center.
