Michigan Captures Five Individual Crowns at MSU Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- In the University of Michigan wrestling team's last preseason tournament of the 2001-02 campaign, members of the third-ranked Wolverine squad captured half of the 10 individual titles at the Michigan State Open on Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 17-18).
Winning their respective weight classes were Foley Dowd (Howell, N.J./The Peddie School) at 133 pounds, Mike Kulczycki (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edward HS) at 149 pounds, Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS) at 174, Kyle Smith (Butte, Mont./Butte HS) at 197, and Matt Brink (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport HS) at heavyweight. All six wrestlers swept through the opposing field, compiling perfect 4-0 records en route to their respective titles. Olson, a sixth-year senior, cruised to his fourth consecutive MSU Open title, while Kulczycki and Brink were repeat winners.
Also placing in the top three for the Wolverines were A.J. Grant (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) with a third-place finish at 125 pounds, Ryan Bertin (Broadview Heights, Ohio/St. Edward HS) with a second-place finish at 157 pounds and Andy Hrovat (Gates Mills, Ohio/St. Edward HS) with a third-place finish at 184 pounds.
Up next for the Wolverine wrestling team will be the annual Maize and Blue intrasquad meet on Wednesday (Nov. 21) at 6:30 p.m. at Davison High School in Davison, Mich.
