Cammalleri's Overtime Goal Lifts Michigan Over Miami

OXFORD, Ohio -- Junior forward Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) scored just 57 seconds into overtime to give the No. 11 University of Michigan ice hockey team a 3-2 win over Miami (Ohio) in front of a sold-out Goggin Ice Arena on Friday (Dec. 7) night, extending the Wolverines' winning streak to a season-high four games.
Cammalleri, who has been credited with the game-winning goal in each of the last three games, took a pass from sophomore defenseman Andy Burnes (Battle Creek, Mich.) at center ice and skated down the right side into the RedHawks' zone, where he fired a shot that beat Miami goaltender David Burleigh in the top right corner. Burnes, who also netted his first career goal in the contest, posted his first career multi-point game in the win. Each team had four skaters on the ice due to a pair of penalties late in the third period to sophomore Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) and Miami's Danny Stewart.
In a game that saw Michigan either tied or trailing for the entire 60 minutes of regulation, the Wolverines extended their road unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1) and extended their mark in Central Collegiate Hockey Association play to 6-0-1 since suffering a sweep at the hands of Northern Michigan on Oct. 26-27.
Miami opened the game with a 1-0 lead on its first power play, scoring just 1:47 in on a blast from sophomore Mike Kompon. With freshman defenseman Eric Werner (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) serving two minutes for obstruction-hooking, the only penalty of the opening stanza, the RedHawks worked the puck around to Kompon on the right blueline, where he unleashed a shot that beat senior goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.), finding its way to the upper right-hand corner of the net.
The Wolverines evened the score with 16 seconds left in the first on a slapshot from freshman Jason Ryznar (Anchorage, Alaska). With a faceoff in the RedHawks' zone, junior forward John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) won the draw and fed it to freshman forward Milan Gajic (Burnaby, B.C.), who eventually found Ryznar just inside the right blueline for the score.
The RedHawks struck again early in the second period to regain the lead, scoring shorthanded just 55 seconds after intermission. With Miami down one man due to a hooking penalty, sophomore Greg Hogeboom found himself all alone in the right faceoff circle of the Wolverines' zone and put a shot on net that went in off the crossbar, beating Blackburn on his glove side.
Michigan answered just under four minutes later when Burnes netted his first career marker. Senior forward Craig Murray (Penticton, B.C.) won control of the puck behind the Miami net and fed it along the end boards to senior forward Mark Mink (Livonia, Mich.), who chipped it up the right boards to Burnes for the shot in the bottom of the right-hand faceoff circle. RedHawks' goaltender David Burleigh initially stopped the shot but mistakenly kicked the puck in to make the score 2-2.
Blackburn made 23 saves in the win, while Burleigh stopped 29 of Michigan's 32 shots. The two teams combined for just seven penalties and three power plays, with the RedHawks converting on their only opportunity while the Wolverines were held scoreless on two attempts.
The Wolverines and RedHawks will conclude the series Saturday night (Dec. 8), with opening faceoff slated for 7:35 p.m. at Goggin Ice Arena.

N O T E S
With the win, Michigan extends its winning streak against Miami to 11 games, its longest such streak against any team in the CCHA.
The Wolverines' overtime win is its second straight this season and is its second consecutive extra-stanza win at Goggin Ice Arena. U-M posted a 4-3 (ot) win at Miami on Nov. 13, 1999.
Michigan, which went into overtime for the fifth time this season, owns a 2-2-1 record in extra-session games.
Michigan is now unbeaten (5-0-1) in its last six road games. U-M is also unbeaten (6-0-1) in its last seven CCHA games.
Mike Cammalleri posted his first career overtime game-winning goal and his third game-winning marker in the last three games. He leads the team with three GWG this season.
Andy Burnes netted his first career goal and posted his first career multi-point game, adding an assist on the game-winning goal.
Tonight's win marked the second time in three games the Wolverines have rallied to win after allowing the game's first goal.
Win an assist, John Shouneyia extended his point streak to five games, the longest point streak by a U-M player this season. Shouneyia has tallied 3-6-9 in his last five skates and has recorded an assist in each contest.
Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Red Berenson
On tonight's game ... "I liked the way our team played. It was a good team effort and we did a lot of good things out there. Miami's a good team and they made it tough. We had to overcome coming from behind, and they scored a shorthanded goal, which really hurt, and a goal early on their first power play, which were two key goals in the game. Our team battled back, we got the goals we needed, and we went into overtime, where anything can happen."
On playing overtime 4-on-4 because of penalties ... "I'm a big fan of it. I would play 4-on-4 overtime, but I'm probably the only coach in college hockey that would. Not that we're any better than anyone else, but it gives you a chance to play with a little more room, a little more time, and give your best players a chance to play well."
On the offensive production from the defensemen ... "We're not expecting our defense to score a lot of goals, and on the other hand, we do want them to take their shots. Andy Burnes just got a shot through and it ends up in the net. You never know, and you can't score unless you shoot. But, good for him, because Andy Burnes doesn't score a lot of goals and he's not going to be on the scoresheet much, but he's a heart-and-soul player for our team."
On the team's success on the road lately ... "I like the way we are playing, and I like the way our team's coming together. These are tough games, and every night's a battle. We're not any better than any of these teams, but we're finding a way to win. Your best players have to be your best players, you have to play good defense, and hopefully your special teams will be plus. We were minus-two tonight, we were lucky in terms of the special teams, but we got the job done just the same."
Junior Forward Mike Cammalleri
On his game-winning goal ... "Before every game Brian Wiseman (U-M's administrative assistant) tells me where to shoot the puck, and I shoot it wherever he tells me to, so it's all a credit to him. He is a pretty good hockey player, even though he can't play anymore, but he scored a lot of goals, so I figure he knows where to place the puck. Before every game I ask him where to shoot the puck on the goaltender, he tells me, and I go out there and do it."
