U-M Closes Home Schedule with Win Over Penn State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In its final home dual of the season, the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team picked up a 27-12 Big Ten Conference victory over No. 23 Penn State on Friday (Feb. 16) at Cliff Keen Arena.
The Maize and Blue won the first five matches to take a 19-0 at the break. The match started at 149 pounds and Mike Kulczycki (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edwards HS) scored a 15-9 decision, followed by Pat Owen's (Polson, Mont./Polson HS) 7-3 win at 157 pounds. Charles Martelli (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) then put the Wolverines up 11-0 with his 25-10 technical fall over Chris Vecchio at 165.
All-American Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS), ranked No. 2 at 174 pounds, got his 126th career victory with a 16-9 decision over Mark Becks before 184-pounder Andy Hrovat (Gates Mills, Ohio/St. Edwards HS) earned U-M's second technical fall of the meet, beating Jeff Knupp 23-8 to give the Wolverines a commanding 19-0 lead.
Heavyweight Matt Brink (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport HS) and 141-pounder Clark Forward (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold HS) registered the Wolverines' other victories with 11-3 and 20-10 major decisions, respectively.
U-M will close out the regular season Sunday (Feb. 18) with a trip to Evanston, Ill., to take on the Northwestern Wildcats at 2 p.m.
