ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team had its final indoor home meet of the season with the Harold Silverston Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 17) at the U-M Track Building. The meet was the last tune-up before the team heads to State College, Pa., for the Big Ten Indoor Championships.
Michigan won eight events, and the highlight of the day came on an NCAA provisional mark of 17-5 in Charles DeWildt's (Wyoming, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) winning height in the pole vault.
Junior Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) led the Wolverine sprinters with a victory in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.91. Teammate Kevin Lamb (East Lansing, Mich./Haslett HS) duplicated Okenwa's performance in the 200 with a first-place time of 22.39.
In the middle distance events, the Wolverines continued to dominate. Kevin Rogan (Grass Lake, Mich./Grass Lake HS) and Phil Stead (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child HS) went one-two in the 600-meter run, and Tom Greenless (Milford, Mich./Milford HS) had a runner-up finish in the 800.
In the mile, Terrence Rindler (Portage, Mich./Central HS) took home the crown with a time of 4:15.25. Michigan took the top two spots again in the 3,000, as Brian Turner (Omaha, Neb./Millard North HS) and Steve Lawrence (Consecon, Ontario/East Northumberland SS) came in first and second, respectively.
In addition to DeWildt's great day in the field, Robert Arnold (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty HS) won his first title of the season in the high jump with a height of 6-8 3/4. Oded Padan (Tel Aviv, Israel/Alliance) added a runner-up placement in the triple jump with a jump of 46-11 to round out the Wolverines' day.
The Wolverines will be back in action next Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 24-25) for the Big Ten Indoor Championships in State College, Pa.
