ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team hosted its final indoor home meet of the season with the Harold Silverston Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 17) at the U-M Track Building. The non-scoring meet was the last tune-up for the Wolverines before they head to West Lafayette, Ind., next weekend for the Big Ten Indoor Championships. The highlight of the day came in the mile run, with Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) taking the title with an NCAA provisional time of 4:47.59.
Michigan's sprinters ran well again at a very high level on Saturday. Tamika Craig (Inkster, Mich./Dearborn Robichaud HS) came in first in the 200-meter dash, and the Wolverines took the top three spots in the event as Mora Arnold (Gregory, Mich./Chelsea HS) and Adrena Williams (Berkeley, Calif./James Logan HS) came in second and third, respectively. Candice Mullings (Marietta, Ga./Walton HS) and Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) added runner-up finishes in the 60 and 400, respectively, for a balanced attack.
In addition, Tasha Phillips (Sarasota, Fla./Booker HS) continued to do well in the 60-meter hurdles as she added a second-place finish on the day.
In the field, Nicole DeNamur (Algoma, Wis./Algoma HS) won the high jump with a mark of 5-3, with Breanne Tenclay (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) right behind her in second. The shot put showed its depth as April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) won the crown with a toss of 47-2 1/2, and Erin Massengale (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) and Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) came in second and third, respectively. Mullings and Phillips continued their strong day with top performances in the pole vault and weight throw, repsectively, as each had a runner-up finish.
The Wolverines head to the Big Ten Indoor Championships next Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 24-25) in West Lafayette, Ind.
