DETROIT -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team suffered a 4-2 defeat to top-ranked Michigan State on Saturday (Feb. 17) in front of 19,995 fans at Joe Louis Arena. Craig Murray (Penticton, B.C) and Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.) each scored for the Wolverines. The loss drops U-M six points behind MSU for first place in the CCHA with three games remaining in the regular season.
Michigan State (25-4-4, 18-4-3 CCHA) opened the scoring late in the first period. With the puck in the Wolverine zone, Sean Patchell chipped the puck to Andrew Bogle in the right circle. Bogle flipped a backhand shot on net that found its way past a screened Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) into the net to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead after the first period.
The Wolverines (21-9-5, 15-7-3 CCHA) tied the contest early in the second period on a power-play goal from Murray. Jeff Jillson (North Smithfield, R.I.) took a shot from the right point that was stopped by MSU netminder Ryan Miller before the rebound bounced out above the crease. During a wild scramble in front of the net Murray was able to slap the rebound off Jon Insana's stick and past Miller to knot the score 1-1.
Adam Hall gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead late in the second period. With Jillson serving a minor penalty, Hall deflected Brian Maloney's shot from the right circle past Blackburn to give MSU a one-goal lead after two periods. Hall's second goal of the game early in the third period gave Michigan State a 3-1 lead. Hall worked a two-on-one with Maloney into the Michigan zone before Hall slapped the loose puck into the net to give the Spartans a two-goal cushion.
Maloney added a goal of his own 11:14 into the third period to give MSU a 4-1 lead. Skating with a 5-on-3 advantage, Maloney held the puck in at the right point and skated around Dave Huntzicker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) before lifting a shot past Blackburn. Matzka closed out the scoring with a goal late in the third period to make the final score 4-2.
Blackburn stopped 27 shots, including numerous point-blank opportunities, but suffered the loss, dropping his record to 20-9-6. Miller made 25 saves on the night and improved to 24-4-4.
The Wolverines return to action Thursday (Feb. 22) when they take on Lake Superior State University. The Wolverines and Lakers will square off in Sault St. Marie, Mich., on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. U-M and LSSU will then do battle at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena on Saturday (Feb. 24) beginning at 7:35 p.m.

Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "I thought we got going as the game went on. We'd played pretty well in the second half of the first period and the second period, but I thought [Michigan State] had the momentum tonight. They're a good team, and they played well. They played hard, they scored the goals they needed to score. They didn't give us much, but we didn't earn much. They were the better team tonight."
