Controversial Laker Goal Sends Wolverines to Defeat

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- A controversial goal for Lake Superior State with two minutes remaining added to the University of Michigan ice hockey team's four-game non-winning streak as the No. 5-ranked Wolverines went down 2-1 on Thursday (Feb. 22) at Abel Arena. Michigan, 0-3-1 in its last four games, dropped to 21-10-5 overall and 15-8-3 in the CCHA.
The game was stopped at the 17:58 of the third period to discuss Laker Tyson Turgeon's first goal of the season. Turgeon's shot appeared to spatter off the crossbar and the goal judge did not turn the goal light on. After a discussion between the referee and the goal judge, the goal was counted, putting LSSU up 2-1.
The Wolverines came out strong, pressing the Lakers in their own end for virtually the first six and a half minutes of the contest until LSSU recorded its first shot. Michigan had several chances and outshot the Lakers 14-4 in the first period, but U-M remained scoreless in the first session for the fourth consecutive game.
The Lakers nearly went ahead with a minute left in the first period, but Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) made a tremendous save to preserve the scoreless tie. Laker goaltender Jayme Platt didn't want to be shown up by his counterpart and made a save on Andy Hilbert (Howell, Mich.) -- who was alone in front of the net on the power play -- with two seconds left in the first.
While starting the second period on the power play, Mark Mink (Livonia, Mich.) didn't get enough wood on a shot to a wide-open net from a pretty setup from Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ont.). In the same special-teams attempt, Mike Roemensky (White Lake, Mich.) snapped a pass to Scott Matzka (Port Huron, Mich.), who was knocked down while sliding into the goal mouth and the goal evaded him by mere inches.
U-M continued to put on the offensive pressure the remainder of the period, but the Maize and Blue rendered two uneven Laker rushes in which Blackburn came up with two outstanding saves at the 13-minute mark of the second. Blackburn was standing on his head for most of the first two periods, but could not do anything about Chris McNamara's power-play goal at 14:13 which put LSSU up 1-0.
Playing in desperation, the Wolverines let it all hang out on the ice in the third period and finally capitalized on a power-play goal by Craig Murray (Penticon, B.C.) at 5:36 of the third to tie the game at one apiece. Murray's eighth goal of the season came when Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) dug out the puck to Matzka, who then fed Murray in front of the net for the Wolverines' only score of the game.
The Wolverines and Lakers will have a rematch on Saturday (Feb. 24) at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, starting at 7:35 p.m.
