Michigan Trio Qualifies for Winter Cup Challenge Finals

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Four members of the University of Michigan's men's gymnastics team competed in the all-around preliminaries and individual event finals of the Winter Cup Challenge on Friday (Feb. 9).
Senior tri-captain Tim Dehr (Burr Ridge, Ill./Hinsdale Central HS), junior Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS), junior Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS) and sophomore Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Tier HS) competed in this annual meet to fill the three remaining roster spots on the U.S. Senior National Team.
All three all-arounders qualified for Saturday's finals by placing in the top 36 overall. Kenna finished in fourth place with a score of 51.000, Zimmerman claimed sixth place (50.750), and Diaz-Luong finished eighth (50.650). The three Wolverines finished 1-2-3 among the 39 competitors in the second session.
Dehr, who competed as a specialist on the pommel horse, finished tied for second place with a score of 8.600. Diaz-Luong tied for second on the high bar (9.150).
The three Wolverines who qualified to the all-around finals will compete Saturday (Feb. 10) at 7:45 p.m. PST at the Pepsi AllSport Arena. The scores from Friday do not count toward the final standings, and the top three finishers Saturday will earn spots on the U.S. National Team.
