Owen Helps Wolverines Take Down Hoosiers on Road

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team defeated the No. 22 Indiana Hoosiers 24-14 in Big Ten Conference action Friday (Feb. 9). It was the Wolverines fifth straight Big Ten win over the Hoosiers and sixth consecutive victory overall in the series.

The match started with the heavyweights, and Matt Brink (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport HS) gave the Wolverines their first three points with a 4-2 decision over IU's Mike Dixon. The lead in the team score changed hands in each of the next four matches, with 133-pounder Foley Dowd (Howell, N.J./The Peddie School) putting U-M up 7-5 with an 18-6 win over Brian Smiley and Mike Kulczycki (North Royalton, Ohio/St. Edwards HS) giving U-M the lead for good (10-8) with a 4-0 decision over Gabe Cook at 149.

At 157 pounds, Pat Owen's (Polson, Mont./Polson HS) win by fall -- his second in as many matches -- with just eight seconds left in the second period gave the Wolverines a 16-8 lead. Senior 174-pounder Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS) and 197-pounder Joe DeGain (White Lake, Mich./Clarkston HS) posted major decisions to secure the victory.

U-M is home Sunday (Feb. 11) for more Big Ten action against No. 9-ranked Ohio State, beginning at 2 p.m.
