ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The fifth-ranked Michigan ice hockey team defeated Northern Michigan 3-1 Friday night (Feb. 9) in front of 6,361 fans at Yost Ice Arena. The contest was head coach Red Berenson's 700th game behind the bench for the Wolverines, dating back to 1984. During that span, Berenson -- U-M's all-time winningest coach -- has guided the Wolverines to a 442-214-44 record.
Mark Mink (Livonia, Mich.) opened the scoring 5:01 into the first period. Mink took a pass from John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) at center ice and skated through the Wildcat zone before circling the net and taking a shot from inside the end line. The puck deflected off goalie Dan Ragusett's skate and into the goal.
Northern Michigan (12-10-7, 8-9-6 CCHA) tied the contest just over two minutes later on Chad Theuer's goal. Bryce Cockburn took a shot from inside the slot that was deflected by Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) but Theuer was able to backhand the rebound over Blackburn's outstretched glove to knot the score 1-1.
Michigan (21-7-4, 15-5-4 CCHA) regained the lead late in the first period on Andy Hilbert's (Howell, Mich.) 21st goal of the season. Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) won the faceoff to the right of Ragusett and drew the puck back to Hilbert just outside the circle, and Hilbert's wrist shot along the ice found the back of the net to put U-M ahead 2-1 after the first period.
Mark Kosick's (Victoria, B.C.) power-play goal extended the Wolverines' lead to 3-1 midway through the second period. Shouneyia carried the puck through the left circle and passed across the slot to Kosick, who was perched at the right post and one-timed a shot into the open net.
Blackburn delivered a strong performance in goal for U-M, stopping 25 shots, including 10 in the third period, and improving his record to 20-7-4. Ragusett stopped 28 Wolverine shots but suffered the defeat and fell to 6-4-3 on the season.
The Wolverines and Wildcats close out the weekend series Saturday night (Feb. 10) at Yost Ice Arena with the opening face-off set for 7:05 p.m. The contest will be televised live on FOX Sports Net (Channel 32 on Comcast).

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "It was a game that was in the balance right until the end. I thought we were lucky at times that they didn't score that second goal. They had too many good chances. (Josh) Blackburn made some great saves, particularly late in the game. It was anyone's game, and we were fortunate to get goals that we got."
On Northern Michigan's offense ... "Our defense played good defense, but Northern kept coming at us. Every time we turned the puck over they were in our face, and they put a lot of pressure on our defense. We expected that, and we don't feel that much that we had a great game. It was an important win, but I can't tell you that it was a great game. It was a hard-fought game, and they're a good team. You can see why three out of the past four games going into tonight were tie games."
Sophomore Forward Mark Mink
On the game ... "We took it to them right off the bat; it was important to come out strong. I think we dominated them both offensively and defensively. We really set the tone."
On his goal ... "It was a fluke goal. I think it went in off someone's skate, but I was just trying to get it at the net. When you shot in on net, anything can happen."
Sophomore Forward John Shouneyia
On goaltender Josh Blackburn ... "I think Blackburn really kept us in it at the beginning. We had kind of a funny goal there at first, but he really made some dominant saves and kept us in the game. Our defense was, at times, a little weak, but he kept us in there, and got us going a little bit."
