ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team completed a two-game sweep of the Ferris State Bulldogs in the first round of the CCHA playoffs with a 3-0 win Saturday night (March 10) in front of 6,395 fans at Yost Ice Arena. Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) turned in his fifth shutout of the season and ninth of his career to send the sixth-ranked Wolverines to the semifinals of the CCHA playoffs.
Michigan (24-11-5) opened the scoring 4:48 into the second period on a power-play goal by Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.). Mark Kosick (Victoria, B.C.) carried the puck across the Ferris State blue line and flipped a pass to Langfeld, who was skating through the right circle. Langfeld fired a shot along the ice that beat Bulldog netminder Phil Osaer to give the Maize and Blue a 1-0 lead.
Mike Cammalleri (Richmond Hill, Ontario) extended the U-M lead to 2-0 on his 25th goal of the season. With Christian Schroder serving a minor penalty for holding, Cammalleri won the faceoff in the right circle and skated around a Bulldog defender before flipping the puck over Osaer's left shoulder to give the Wolverines a two-goal cushion after two periods. Geoff Koch (Exeter, N.H.) added an empty-net goal with six seconds remaining in the contest to round out the scoring.
Blackburn stopped 18 shots in goal for U-M, including a breakaway save on Chris Kunitz with seven minutes remaining in the third period to keep the Bulldogs (13-20-5) off the scoreboard. The win improves Blackburn's record to 23-11-5 on the season. Osaer made 25 saves in goal for Ferris State but suffered the loss, dropping his record to 9-12-3 for the year.
The Wolverines advance to the 8:30 p.m. semifinal game of the CCHA Championship Friday (March 16) at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On the team's performance ... "The team got better as the game went on. In the second we picked it up and really played better once we had the lead. I think overall we played pretty well. It definitely wasn't one of our best games; there wasn't much flow down on the ice."
On goaltender Josh Blackburn ... "He made some big saves for us. Our defense worked hard for him, tipping and blocking where it could and just really working. It was good for him to get the shutout; he not only got the shutout, but he really earned it."
On the seniors ... "I tried to get them all on the ice for the last shift. I don't think they understand the magnitude of their last [home] game. I don't think they will understand until they've been away for a while. They have certainly all had their special moments here at Yost."
Senior Forward Geoff Koch
On the game ... "I think our special teams played well tonight. The power play was much better this weekend, and I think that might have made the difference tonight. Overall, it was a better effort from the whole team."
On goaltender Josh Blackburn ... "He's been huge all season, and tonight he really stood on his head at times and kept us in the game. [Ferris State] really took it to us in the first period and parts of the second period, and he really made some give saves. He proved himself a leader on this team."
On the seniors' last game at Yost Ice Arena ... "This is our last time at Yost, and it feels good to get that win and go out on a good note here. There's a lot of memories that we've had here, and we have really cherished playing at Yost. The crowd's been great and the band has been tremendous all four years that I've been here."
Junior Goaltender Josh Blackburn
On the team's defensive play ... "It was a good effort by the guys tonight; I didn't have to do that much. We played great defensive hockey tonight -- guys were blocking shots and back-checking. It was a great effort by everyone tonight."
On his confidence ... "Anytime you play well, it definitely boosts your confidence about your game, and I like where mine is right now. I'm going to just fine-tune some things in practice this week and come back and turn out the same game next week."
