Wolverines Fall to Spartans in CCHA Tournament Final
3/17/2001 12:00:00 AM | Ice Hockey
DETROIT -- When the Michigan State Spartans take a lead in the game of ice hockey, they sit back and play the lock and call it "Miller Time." And that's exactly what the Spartans did to Michigan at Joe Louis Arena on Saturday night (March 17) in the championship game of the CCHA Tournament.
The Spartans' defensive mode and the shutout goaltending of Ryan Miller were just too much for Michigan, and the Spartans earned an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament with a 2-0 win in front of 16,031 fans. MSU scored two first-period goals and held U-M to just nine shots on goal in the last two periods.
Michigan dominated the early action during the first period but the Spartans capitalized with the only goals to gain a 2-0 lead. Michigan State scored at 9:44 as Joe Goodenow banged in a rebound from in front after an Adam Hall shot from the left slot. The Spartans increased their lead as Hall beat Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) through his legs on a slap shot from the top of the right faceoff circle with only 22 seconds left.
The Wolverines then watched the Spartans play their brand of center ice lock, holding Michigan without a shot on net for the first 7:30 of the second period until John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) finally broke the ice.
As the second period action was slow, the third period became a matter of survival for U-M, and the Wolverines played through the defensive mode of MSU, gaining excellent scoring opportunities with seven minutes into the period, and continued pressing throughout the final period.
Michigan awaits a bid to the 12-team NCAA Championship field. The announcement of the two regional brackets will be made Sunday afternoon (March 18, 1:30 p.m. EST) on ESPN2. The NCAA Championship begins next weekend with Eastern Regional action March 23-24 in Worcester, Mass., and Western Regional action March 24-25 in Grand Rapids, Mich.

Senior Josh Langfeld (Coon Rapids, Minn.) left the game late in the first period after reinjuring his knee and did not return to the game. He will be checked by trainers and doctors again on Sunday.
Neither team could score during the power-play advantage. Both teams had four power-play chances.
This was only the fifth time a third seed or lower made it into the CCHA Championship final game.
Michigan forward Joe Kautz (Des Plaines, Ill.) and defenseman Dave Huntzicker (Ann Arbor, Mich.) were named to the CCHA all-tournament team.
Q U O T E S
Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "It was a perfect Michigan State game. They scored early and then they scored late in the first period and then held on."
On dropping four of five to MSU this season ... "They have had our number and you have to give them credit. They are a pretty good team and I think you have to credit their play."
On the NCAA Tournament selections ... "We wanted to come out of this game with a little better posture but I can't say what is going to happen."
Sophomore Center Andy Hilbert
On Michigan State ... "It's huge once they a get a goal. They sit back and play passive. You need to score the first goal and get them to play a game they are not used to."
Sophomore Center Mike Cammalleri
On the game ... "Our way of getting in the zone is to keep the play down low. We had our chances but give them credit, they have a good defense and a great goalie."
