Wovlerine Relay Teams Perform Well at Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team concluded its two days of competition at the Florida State Relays on Saturday (March 24). The non-scoring competition was the Wolverines' first outdoor event on the season and was filled with several top Michigan individual and relay performances. The Wolverines won four events over the two days, including three victories from relay teams.

Michigan received half of its victories on Friday (March 23), both from its relay section. Both the 800- and 3,200-meter relay teams came in first, while the Wolverines added a third-place finish in the 3,200-meter relay. Senior Adrienne Hunter (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) had the only individual title for the Wolverines, which occured on Friday in the 400-meter dash. Freshman Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) had the next best finish on the day for the Maize and Blue as she took runner-up in the long jump.

The Wolverines came right back on Sauturday (March 24) with four great relay runs. The 6,000-meter relay gave U-M its fourth victory in the two days. Both the 1,600-meter and 1,600-meter sprint relay teams produced second-place finishes, while the 4x100-meter relay exchange came in third.

Hunter continued her strong weekend, running to second place in the 800-meter run. Senior Tamika Craig (Inkster, Mich./Dearborn Robichaud HS) posted a third-place finish in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles for the Maize and Blue's other top track performance.

In the field, Michigan did not show any rust in its first appearance outdoors. Sophomore April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) took second in the shot put, while freshman teammate Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) was fifth. Bickett followed that with a runner-up in the discus. Junior Erin Massengale (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) added a fifth-place performace in the discus in her first weekend of competition.

Michigan heads to the Stanford Invitational next weekend (March 31-April 1) in Palo Alto, Calif.
