Wolverines Travel to California
The University of Michigan men's track and field team will travel for the prestigious Mt. San Antonio College (SAC) Relays this weekend (April 20-22) at the Hilmer Lodge Memorial Stadium in Walnut, Calif. Michigan will join several collegiate teams from all over the country over the three-day competition.
Last Year at Mt. SAC Relays
Michigan has a few Wolverines who will return to the Mt. SAC Relays after turning in top performances a year ago. Mike Wisniewski (Temperance, Mich./Bedford HS) ran an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 10,000-meter run (29:38.77) to highlight the long-distance group. Michigan's top effort from its field athletes came via Charles DeWildt (Wyoming, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS), who notched a Michigan outdoor season-best 17-1 in the pole vault. Derek Applewhite (Brighton, Colo./Brighton HS) raced to a 14.42 while placing runner-up in the university/open division of the 110-meter hurdles.
Okenwa Triple Victories at Michigan Triangular
Junior Ike Okenwa (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) won two individual events and one relay at the Michigan Triangular (April 14), helping the Wolverines (163 points) over Central Michigan (133) and Michigan State (79). Michigan took first in 11 of the 19 events on the day. Okenwa was victorious in the 100 (10.72) and 200-meter dashes (21.59), and was the second-leg of the 400-meter relay first-place team (41.93). Close Call in 400
Senior Ravi Smith (Southfield, Mich./Lathrup HS) edged out sophomore teammate Tony Wishart (Yellow Spings, Ohio/Bellview HS) to win the 400-meter dash at the Michigan Triangular (April 14). Smith, who ran a time of 48.64, was five one-hundredths of a second faster than Wishart's 48.69.
Trio Wins First Titles of 2001
Senior co-captains Andy Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) and Josh Sellers (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee HS) and freshman Mason Ward (Cincinnati, Ohio/Colerain HS) all won their first individual event of the 2001 season at the Michigan Triangular (April 14). Derr, whose specialty is the javelin, took first in that with a throw of 188-9. Sellers has been on the winning side of several relay teams thus far, but had to wait till the Michigan Triangular to claim his first individual title of the 2001 season in the 400-meter hurdles. Ward picked up his first career win by taking the 1,500-meter run crown at the.
Okenwa Leading the Way, Again
The entire indoor season, junior Ike Okenwa led the team with the most individual wins, and he is doing it again during the outdoor season. Okenwa has three individual wins this season, two more than any other Wolverine on the squad. He took first in the 200-meter dash at the Aztec Track Classic (March 24) and added victories in the 100 and 200 at the Michigan Triangular (April 14).
