Pomona-Pitzer Invitational Productive for Wolverines
4/21/2001 12:00:00 AM | Women's Track & Field
Michigan began the day running well in the sprints as senior Candice Mullings (Marietta, Ga./Walton HS) took sixth in the 100-meter dash. Sophomore Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) and senior Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) came in right after one another as Knazze and Caruthers took eighth and ninth, respectively, in the 200.
The Wolverines' middle distance was in top shape, with senior Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/LaSalle SS) giving the Maize and Blue a runner-up finish in the 800-meter run. Fellow senior Adrienne Hunter (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) was right behind Ouellet in third, and sophomore Rachel Sturtz (Traverse, Mich./Traverse HS) rounded out the top 10 in eighth.
Redshirt sophomore Jeanne Spink (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea HS) was the lone representative in the 3,000-meter run for Michigan, but she did not disappoint, finishing in seventh.
In the 400-meter hurdles, the Wolverines had three of the top six places. Tamika Craig (Inkster, Mich./Dearborn Robichaud HS) was near the top of the leader board, adding another Michigan runner-up finish. Freshman Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) and junior Shalina Rankin (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln HS) ended up in fifth and sixth, respectively.
The field events were highlighted by freshman Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS), who had the third second-place finish of the day for Michigan, in the discus. Sophomore Nicole DeNamur (Algoma, Wis./Algoma HS) added a fourth-place finish in the high jump, as former Wolverine Nicole Forrester (1996-99) won the event competing for Canada. Coming off her record-setting week in the hammer, sophomore April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) was 20th in the event on Friday, but she did take eighth in the shot put.
The Wolverines will be at the Mt. SAC Relays this weekend (April 21-22) in Walnut, Calif.
