Wolverines Finish Seventh at Big Ten Championships

FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. -- The University of Michigan women's golf team battled windy conditions for the second straight day and shot 318 in the final round of the Big Ten Conference Championships on Sunday (April 29) to finish seventh at the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course. The Wolverines finished with a 1,248 championship total after rounds of 309-303-318-318 in the 72-hole event.
Michigan State held on to its two-day lead to win the conference title by 11 strokes. The Spartans (302-300-309-308/1219) finished ahead of Indiana (303-301-318-308/1230) and Northwestern (304-303-314-309/1230), which tied for second. Ohio State's Mollie Fankhauser took home individual medalist honors as she finished with a 13-over-par 301 total after rounds of 70-77-78-76. Purdue's Kari Damron (74-75-80-74/303) and Michigan State's Allison Fouch (78-70-76-79/303) tied for runner-up honors.
Wolverine junior Bess Bowers (Bloomington, Ind./North HS) continued her strong championship as she finished with a career-best tie for eighth after a final round of 78. She finished with a 307 total after carding rounds of 75, 76 and 78 during the first two days.
Sophomore Kim Benedict (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) tied for 23rd after finishing with a final round of 82. Benedict fired rounds of 76-74-82 for a 314 championship total. Junior LeAnna Wicks (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) finished just behind Benedict as she tied for 25th after carding a 78 in her final round. Wicks tallied rounds of 79-78-80 for a 315 championship total.
Junior Misia Lemanski (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) tied for 37th (79-80-79-83/321), junior Cortney Reno (Grosse Ile, Mich./Grosse Ile HS) tied for 46th (79-85-81-80/325) and freshman Sarah Kruer (La Jolla, Calif./La Jolla Country Day) finished 51st (82-75-89-83/329).
The Wolverines have completed the main portion of their 2000-01 schedule and now await selection to compete in the school's first-ever NCAA Regional. This year team's from across the country will be sent to three Regional sites -- Chapel Hill, N.C. (East), West Lafayette, Ind. (Central) or Corvallis, Ore. (West) -- to compete Thursday through Saturday, May 10-12.
