DURHAM, N.C. -- The University of Michigan men's track and field team competed at the Duke Invitational (April 6-7) at Wallace Wade Stadium. Senior Charles DeWildt (Wyoming, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) led the way for the Wolverines by claiming first place in the pole vault with a height of 17-0 3/4 on Saturday. It was DeWildt's first appearance this outdoor season.
Friday's competition was highlighted by the distance medley relay team, which took third overall and had the second fastest collegiate time (9:44.65).
Michigan's senior co-captains also turned in two outstanding individual efforts on day one. Josh Sellers (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee HS) was ninth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 48.44, while Andy Derr (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) produced a ninth-place finish in the javelin with a toss of 188-11.
The Wolverines turned out strong performances on the second day of competition in the middle distances. Kevin Rogan (Grass Lake, Mich./Grass Lake HS) barely edged out redshirt freshman Dan Cooke (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) by one one-hundredth of a second (1:53.99/1:54.00), as the two finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in the 800-meter run. Freshman Brian Turner (Omaha, Neb./Millard North HS) produced an 11th-place finish in the 1,500 with a time of 3:50.69.
Redshirt freshman Ryan Hesselink (Freeport, Mich./Thornapple-Kellogg HS) continued to better his time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as he took 11th, posting a time of 9:43.92.
In addition to DeWildt's success in the field, junior Robert Arnold (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty HS) came in fourth place in the high jump with a mark of 6-9.
The Maize and Blue relay teams had two top-10 times on the second day of competition. The 1,600-meter team finished in eighth, while the 400-meter relay came in 10th.
The Wolverines will host their first outdoor meet of the season with the Michigan Triangular next Saturday (April 14) at Ferry Field, with Central Michigan and Michigan State coming to town. Field events start at 9 a.m.
