Wolverines Tie for Fifth Place at Marshall Invitational

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The University of the Michigan men's golf team used consistent play in a key NCAA District IV battle to tie for fifth place at the two-day Marshall Invitational, which concluded Saturday (April 7) at Guyan Country Club. The Wolverines tallied team rounds of 289-289-293 for a season-best total of 871, which tied them with Kentucky (289-294-288) for the fifth spot.
Ohio State took home both Invitational trophies as the Buckeyes (283-275-281/839) won the team title and Mike Austin (67-67-74/208) won the individual medalist honor. Toledo (286-280-289/855) finished as the team runner-up and Miami (Ohio) (281-290-286/857) was third. Four players tied for the individual runner-up -- Louisville's Chris Campbell (69-68-74/211); Xavier's Tim Donovan (72-69-70/211); Toledo's Brad Heaven (68-69-74/211) and Kentucky's Ryan Wilson (71-69-71/211).
As for the Wolverines, Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS) got back on track as he had a solid tournament. He led the Wolverines with a tie for 14th after rounds of 72-72-70 for a 214 total. Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) continued his strong spring as he tied for 19th after recording a career-best three-round tournament total of 216 after carding rounds of 72, 71 and 73.
Scott Carlton (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) tied his career best three-round tournament total of 218 as he tied for 32nd after rounds of 74, 70 and 74. Kyle Kilcherman (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) tied for 59th (71-76-78/225) and Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) tied for 71st (75-76-76/227).
The Wolverines gear up for another District IV battle as they head south to Columbus, Ohio, to participate in the Kepler Invitational, Saturday and Sunday (April 14-15) at Ohio State University's Scarlet Course.

Junior Andrew Chapman set a new career best total for a three-round tournament at the Marshall Invitational after totaling a 216 (72-71-73). His previous best tournament total was 218 fired at the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 11-12, 1999).
Redshirt freshman Scott Carlton tied his career best total for a three-round tournament at the Marshall Invitational after totaling a 218 (74-70-74). He fired the same total earlier this season at the Wolverine North Invitational.
The Wolverines' team total of 871 at the Marshall Invitational was a season-best mark by nine strokes. The previous best total was 880 earlier this year at the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 9-10).
Redshirt junior Kyle Kilcherman's Invitational total of 225 (71-76-78) was a season-best three-round total. He bettered the 230 tallied at the Wolverine North (Sept. 23-24).
Fifth-year senior Scott Hayes has now led the Wolverines in four of the nine tournaments this year, and the team has now finished in the top five in five of the nine events.
