BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- University of Michigan junior Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) became the first Wolverine to win back-to-back Big Ten Conference outdoor 3,000-meter titles today (Saturday, May 19) at the Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Indiana University. With the win, Michigan moved up to finish the second day of competition in fifth place with 32.25 points, trailing Purdue (67), Minnesota (53.25), Wisconsin (41) and Indiana (41).

In the field events, sophomore April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) scored for the second day in a row, this time in the shot put. Phillips took third overall, winning her individual flight with a personal-best and NCAA provisional mark of 50-4.
Once again, Michigan dominated the middle distances during preliminary action. Three Wolverines qualified in the 800-meter run, including sophomore Rachel Sturtz (Traverse, Mich./Traverse HS), who posted the fastest time on the day (2:10.27). Sturtz won the Big Ten indoor 800-meter title this year. She will be joined in the finals by senior Adrienne Hunter (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) and senior Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/LaSalle SS), who finished second and fourth, respectively, in the second heat.
The 1,500-meter run proved to be even better than the 800 for the Maize and Blue. Michigan won both heats behind Ouellet and Jazwinski, who are headed into the finals with the top two times overall. Michigan had two other runners advance as sophomore Katie Easton (Fort Gratiot, Mich./Port Huron Northern HS) and freshman Amy Hatfield (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the first heat.
Sophomore Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) had a busy day in the sprints, qualifying for the finals on Sunday in both her events. Knazze was runner-up in her heat of the 200-meter dash and took fourth in the first heat of the 400 to advance. Senior teammate Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) took third in the first heat of the 400, giving the Wolverines a speedy duo in the finals.
In addition to her third-place finish in the heptathlon, junior Tasha Phillips (Sarasota Fla./Booker HS) will compete for the third day in a row in the 100-meter hurdles, as she came in fifth in her heat and advanced to the finals. Sophomore Breanne Tenclay (Grandville, Mich./Grandville HS) also scored for the Wolverines in the heptathlon, maintaining her fifth-place spot.
Two Wolverines will race in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles after running well today. Freshman Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) was fourth in the first heat, while junior Shalina Rankin (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln HS) was right behind her in fifth, as both had times good enough to move on to Sunday.
Michigan will be back in action tomorrow (Sunday, May 20) for the final day of the Big Ten Outdoor Championships, beginning at 11:40 a.m. EST/CDT.
